Beyond Good and Evil is easily the greatest release
of 2003. It has a healthy share of stealth, action, and adventure.
Honestly, it has almost everything possible going for it. The
character designs and surroundings supply a perfect atmosphere, and
the graphics are superb. The combat is a lot like the 3D Legend of
Zelda games, but somehow just feels better. The story is rather
clichéd, but the gameplay it has more than makes up for it, and it's
not bad. Hidden goodies are abundant, but
sidequests are lacking. It doesn't matter to me, though, because I'm
not a sidequest kind of guy. Actually, the game is very linear, but
still has high replay value because it's just a whole lot of fun.
The camera almost never gets in bad spots, and when it does, you can
most likely move it. The backup characters do their
job and do it well, and they're not stupid. They don't go
stand around, telling the enemies to kill them. They have special
abilities which you can tell them to use at any time which also come
in handy, and are sometimes necessary. The only
thing BG&E has going against it is its length. It's really short. I
beat it in thirteen hours the first time around, though I'm sure
there are others out there that will brag about beating it in five.
Anyway, Beyond Good and Evil gets a perfect ten. |
