SOCOM is the most awesome game for
the Playstation 2 to date. No, that's not my opinion—it's
fact.
It contains a vast arsenal of military weaponry (as well as
not-so-military such as the highly over-used Desert Eagle
.50AE. No, people, it's not the best pistol in the world, and it's
not that great in the game either. It causes major damage, but kicks
like a mule.) eventually. When you first start the game, you only
have the MP5A5 and MP5SD6 at your disposal. (Or HK5 and HK5 SD as the
game calls them. I wonder why. Seems using HK instead of MP would be
more of a copyright infringement...) As you complete missions, you
unlock the other weaponry. If you beat all the missions, you unlock
just about every one in the game (with the exception of the
multi-grenade launcher.), and you also get promoted from Ensign to
Lieutenant Junior Grade. As you complete all the missions again, you
get promoted yet again. Unfortunately, I'm only Lieutenant Junior
Grade as of right now.
Probably the biggest selling-point to the game is the microphone
headset it comes with which you can use to command your
AI-controlled comrades or talk to other people online. It's not all
that exciting really. I've never played online, and I'm sure people
would never shut up ala Counter Strike...
For each mission you have the same three teammates: Boomer, Jester,
and Spectre. There are two squads; you and Boomer are on one, Jester
and Spectre are on the other. Even if one of your teammates "dies"
in a mission, he's back in the next one. The game scores you by how
you work with your teammates, how stealthy you are, and accuracy
with your weapon.
Back on the subject of weapons, this isn't a game where you start
with 100 health and you can get armor upgrades or even "medpaks."
You can get shot a few times, depends on where, before dying. Same
goes for the bad guys. But if you're using a sound-suppressed weapon
(which I would assume is using sub-sonic ammunition), hitting them
in the chest isn't going to have the same effect as hitting them in
the chest with an unsuppressed one. However, I do think it's a
little exaggerated with how much sub-sonic ammunition those people
can take... But a headshot with any kind of gun is an instant kill.
So go for the head. You'll get the best accuracy rating and take
them down faster.
Here is a list of weapons available as your primary weapon in the
game (along with correct names)
H&K MP5A5 - It is referred to as the HK5 in the game.
It's pretty good in all respects.
H&K MP5SD6 - It is referred to as the HK5 SD in the
game. It's pretty good in all respects and silent.
Those two are the first guns you get when you start a new game.
However, there is a bug that allows you to get an M16. I can't think
of exactly how to do it off the top of my head. It has something to
do with pressing left in the primary weapon selection screen...
Colt M4A1 - It is just called the M4 in the game. It
has three different versions: normal, sound-suppressed (which does
less damage than the normal version but is quieter), and normal with
an M203 grenade launcher. It has a 2.5x scope.
Colt M16A2 - Actually, it's most likely FN since they're
contracted to make M16s for the U.S. military. It's called the
M16 in the game and looks like an A1, but it's only got a burst
fire mode, go figure. It has two versions: normal and with M203
grenade launcher.
Appellee M60E3 - Called the M60E3 in the game. It's a
light machine gun. It has a relatively low rate of fire and is
fairly loud.
Cadillac Gage Corporation M63A Stoner - Called the M63A.
Yet another light machine gun. It's the LMG the bad guys use. It has
a lower fire rate than the M60 but is more accurate.
SIG SG551 - It's called the 552 in the game, but it is
definitely not a 552. If anything it's a 551, but it could
be a 550. My guess is it's a 551 though. It has a 2.5x scope and is
similar to an M4.
IMI Uzi - It's called a 9mm sub in the game. It's not
very loud (I don't know why), inaccurate, and useless. It's what a
lot of the bad guys use.
AK-47 - The obligatory AK-47. Who knows who manufactured the
ones in the game? It's called the AK-47 in the game. It's not
all that accurate because the majority of people think that AK-47s
are somehow inaccurate. I would like to point out the falsity
of that. *Points it out.* Remember that people, and maybe
some day we'll have good AK-47s in most games. (Rainbow
Six 3: Raven Shield is one exception. The AK-47 is actually
better than the M4! HOLY SLAG! And the M4 isn't that bad
either, just not my favorite gun.
Anyway, this is a SOCOM review (or something) so I'll get
back to it...)
AKS-74 - Called the AKS-74. It's more accurate than the AK-47
and I think slightly louder, otherwise pretty much the same.
FN P90 - Referred to as the F90 in the game. It has
fifty round magazines and is pretty inaccurate. It's used by some of
the bad guys in the last mission.
Now for the long rifles.
Barrett M82A1A - Just called the M82A1A. It is a .50
caliber semi-automatic. It is the most powerful weapon in the game.
It also has the lowest fire rate (which is another mistake most
games make. This thing is semi-auto and can fire way faster than
most games let you.) It has two levels of zoom: 8x and 16x.
McMillian M87 - Called the M87ELR. It is a .50 caliber
bolt-action rifle. It's the second most powerful gun in the game. It
has slightly worse accuracy than the M82, but it's the same in
volume, range, and fire rate.
Knight's Armament Company SR-25 - Just called the SR-25. It is a .308
caliber semi-auto rifle based on the AR-15 receiver. It is the same
as the M82 except it has a shorter range. It also has a
sound-suppressed version which quiets it (duh) and lowers the range
and accuracy. (Useful, of course!
)
M79 Grenade Launcher - Just called the M79. It is a
hand-held 40mm grenade launcher. It has a fairly low fire rate,
medium range and accuracy (not that it matters too much since it's a
grenade launcher), and it's pretty loud.
Pistols are the only weapons you can equip as sidearms.
H&K MK23 Mod 0 - Called the Mark 23. It's mediocre. It has a
sound-suppressed version as well, which is what I use most of the
time.
SIG P226 - Named the 226 in the game. The same as the
MK23 except it's slightly more accurate.
9mm Pistol - That's what it's called in the game. I can't
identify it. It has a sound-suppressor and is exactly the same as
the silenced MK23.
Glock 18 - Called the Model 18 in the game. It is a
selective-fire pistol. It has semi, three-round burst, and full-auto
modes. It has less range than the MK23, is as inaccurate as
possible, and is louder than the MK23.
FN Five-SeveN - Called the F57. It is just as loud as
the MK23, but has slightly less accuracy and range than the MK23.
Beretta M92F - Called the M9. It has less volume and
accuracy than the Five-SeveN, but it has more range.
IMI Desert Eagle XIX .50AE - Called the Desert Eagle .50.
It is the loudest pistol (it's as loud as possible), as inaccurate
as the Glock 18 (inaccurate as possible), has the lowest fire rate
possible, but it has the greatest range of any pistol.
Woo. Somehow I don't think all that belongs here... I'm done. I
can't stand to talk about this any longer—I'M
GOING TO GO PLAY!!
